Both Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit can likewise be watched on Netflix. If you want to know where exactly you can find the movies and whether they are featured in their theatrical or extended versions, make sure to read this article since it gives a comprehensive list of all popular streaming services and whether you can find the movies there. This article will also look into why the trilogies are suddenly absent from almost all streaming services. Editor’s Note This guide is regularly updated due to the transitory nature of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies streaming rights. Are Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit on Netflix? Can you stream it there? Netflix is a popular streaming platform that does not currently feature The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The movies were previously added to the platform in 2018 but were removed in January 2020. Warner Bros. has discussed allowing certain platforms to stream the franchise in the future. The answer to which versions of the movies were featured on Netflix differs between countries, but the United States and Canadian versions feature the theatrical version of the first movie and the extended versions of the following two movies. The extended versions include important plot points that were cut from the theatrical versions to make the movies more comprehensible for audiences. Many fans recommend watching the extended versions of the trilogy as they provide a different outlook on the series. As of February 2023, Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit are again available on Netflix, but only in certain countries. If you’re trying to watch both Lord of the Rings and Hobbit in the USA, you should be perfectly fine. Are Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit on Hulu? Can you stream it there? Hulu obtained the rights to stream the Lord of the Rings franchise in December 2020, but only in their theatrical versions, which disappointed fans who prefer the extended versions. The movies were removed from Hulu in January 2021, but this gave Hulu an advantage over other streaming platforms that did not have the franchise available. The Hobbit trilogy is not currently available on Hulu as well, as it was removed due to Warner Bros. moving their properties to their own streaming service. Are Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit on Disney+? Can you stream it there? No, you cannot watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy or the Hobbit trilogy on Disney+. These movies are not currently available on the platform as the rights to stream these movies are owned by other companies. The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies are owned by Warner Bros, and as of now, the movies are not available due to the transition of Warner Bros. properties to their own streaming service. Are Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit on HBOMax? Can you stream it there? HBOMax is a streaming service launched by WarnerMedia in May 2020, which contains all of Warner Bros. properties on premium television service. The platform provides users with over 10,000 hours of content, including HBOMax originals. Since the Lord of the Rings trilogy is owned by Warner Bros., it is only natural that it features on the platform. However, the three featured movies are only in their theatrical version, which is a criticism directed towards the streaming service as fans prefer the extended versions. The Hobbit trilogy is not available on HBOMax, but this is not consistent across all countries. Despite this, the platform features all Lord of the Rings-related content, including upcoming television shows and documentaries. Are Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit on Amazon Prime? Can you stream it there? Amazon Prime is another streaming service besides HBOMax that has all three movies of the Lord of the Rings trilogy available. It offers both the theatrical and extended versions of the movies, which sets it apart from other services. Additionally, viewers can purchase the trilogy in either version to keep. The Hobbit trilogy is also available on Amazon Prime.

With fantasy stories in film and television, few projects compare to the overall scale and importance of The Lord of the Rings. Based on the fantasy series of books by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings is an epic story of good versus evil as a hobbit undertakes a quest to destroy the One Ring and defeat the Dark Lord Sauron. This saga was famously depicted in Peter Jackson’s award-winning The Lord of the Rings trilogy. These include Jackson’s prequel trilogy, The Hobbit, which covers Tolkien’s novel of the same name. Prime Video created The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power, a television series set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings. Plus, there are animated specials in addition to live-action films. Below, you’ll find out how to stream, rent, or buy each film or television show. The Hobbit 1977 Where to rent or buy Prime Video / Apple TV / Vudu / YouTube One of the first adaptations of Tolkein’s books about Middle-earth was the 1977 animated film, The Hobbit. Unlike Jackson’s trilogy, The Hobbit portrayed the story of Bilbo Baggins and his quest to reclaim the treasure at Lonely Mountain in 78 minutes. The Hobbit was also an animated musical television special, not a movie. Directed by Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass of the famous Rankin/Bass production company, The Hobbit featured the voices of Orson Bean as Bilbo Baggins, Richard Boone as Smaug, Hans Conried as Thorin Oakenshield, and John Huston as Gandalf / Narrator. The Lord of the Rings 1978 Where to rent or buy Prime Video / Apple TV / Vudu / YouTube The Lord of the Rings was a 1980 animated adaptation that covered the entirety of the events in The Fellowship of the Ring and some of the storylines from The Two Towers. The film explains the forging of the Rings of Power and how Sauron created the One Ring to destroy Middle-earth. Directed by Ralph Bakshi, the film follows Frodo Baggins voiced by Christopher Guard and the Fellowship’s quest to destroy the Ring at Mordor. The animated film was a major influence on Jackson’s eventual trilogy and is worth a look for the curious and not-too-critical fanbase. The Return of the King 1980 Where to rent or buy Prime Video Rankin and Bass returned to the Tolkien universe with the animated musical television special, The Return of the King. The special is a sequel to 1977’s The Hobbit, not 1978’s The Lord of the Rings. In The Return of the King, Frodo voiced by Orson Bean reaches Mordor with Samwise Gamgee voiced by Roddy McDowall as they attempt to destroy the Ring. Meanwhile, Aragorn voiced by Oscar nominee Theodore Bikel leads his troops against Sauron’s forces in the battle of good versus evil. The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring 2001 Where to stream HBO Max / Prime Video Where to rent or buy Apple TV / Vudu / YouTube The Fellowship of the Ring is the first movie in Jackson’s epic trilogy. Frodo Baggins Elijah Wood comes into possession of the One Ring, which has been sought after by the Dark Lord Sauron for centuries. To protect civilization from the Ring’s power, a council determines the ring must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom. Frodo and eight volunteers form The Fellowship, which includes Gandalf the Grey Ian McKellen, Samwise Gamgee Sean Astin, and Aragorn Viggo Mortenson. The Fellowship sets off on a quest to dismantle the Ring. The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers 2002 Where to stream HBO Max / Prime Video Where to rent or buy Apple TV / Vudu / YouTube After the events of The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo continues with his journey to Mordor. Meanwhile, Aragorn, Legolas Orlando Bloom, and Gimli the Dwarf John Rhys-Davies head toward Rohan to free Théoden from Saruman’s control. The foursome then leads an army against orcs in the Battle of Helm’s Deep. This battle is regarded as one of the greatest fight sequences in cinematic history and the film itself is a terrific middle chapter in the trilogy that also stands on its own as a fine piece of blockbuster fantasy filmmaking. The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King 2003 Where to stream HBO Max / Prime Video Where to rent or buy Apple TV / Vudu / YouTube The Return of the King, the final saga in Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, became Jackson’s magnum opus. The film saw Frodo, Sam, and Gollum Andy Serkis finally arrive at Mordor, but the power of the Ring begins to consume them on the inside. With the hobbits in Mordor, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Gandalf, and their army face off against Sauron’s forces in the final battle for Middle-earth. Multiple endings aside, this film is just about perfect, fully justifying its eventual win for Best Picture at the 2004 Oscars. The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey 2012 Where to stream HBO Max / Prime Video / Hulu Where to rent or buy Apple TV / Vudu / YouTube Jackson returned to the world of Middle-earth in 2012 with The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey. As the first installment in the prequel trilogy to The Lord of The Rings, An Unexpected Journey introduces the audience to a 50-year-old Bilbo Baggins Martin Freeman, the Hobbit who will eventually come into possession of the One Ring. On his birthday, Bilbo is recruited by Gandalf the Grey Ian McKellen to join his team of dwarves, which includes Thorin Oakenshield Richard Armitage, on their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo reluctantly joins, and the adventure to reclaim the mountain from the dragon Smaug voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch will change Middle-earth forever. The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug 2013 Where to stream HBO Max / Prime Video / Hulu Where to rent or buy Apple TV / Vudu / YouTube Following the events of An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug picks up with Bilbo and the company’s journey to reclaim Lonely Mountain. Bilbo is now in possession of the Ring, which grants him invisibility. However, Bilbo discovers that the Ring brings darkness and evil to whoever possesses it. After arriving at the Lonely Mountain, Bilbo enters and tries to steal the Arkenstone, a treasured possession of Thorin’s family. While inside the mountain, Bilbo wakes up Smaug, and the dragon is aware of the dwarves’ plan to steal the gold and reclaim the mountain. The cat-and-mouse game ends with a startling revelation that will affect the people of the nearby Laketown. The Hobbit The Battle of the Five Armies 2014 Where to stream HBO Max / Prime Video Where to rent or buy Apple TV / Vudu / YouTube The Battle of the Five Armies is the heroic conclusion to The Hobbit trilogy. After abandoning the mountain, Smaug heads to Laketown and sets most of the area on fire. The devasting battle ends in a triumph for humanity. As Thorin refuses to split the treasure at Lonely Mountain, an army of Orcs led by Azog the Defiler Manu Bennett moves in on Dale. Gandalf, Bilbo, the dwarf army, Elves, and the remaining townspeople all join forces to face off against the Orc army and protect the city. The Lord of the Rings The Rings of Power 2022 Where to stream Prime Video Set thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, The Rings of Power depicts the Second Age of Middle-earth. Seminal events in Middle-earth’s history will be depicted in the series, such as the shaping of the Rings of Power, the dissolution of the alliance between Elves and men, and the downfall of the island of Númenor. However, the greatest mystery in the series is the identity of the Dark Lord Sauron as evil rises to power. After its first season, the story will continue as Amazon renewed The Rings of Power for a second season. Editors' Recommendations How do I get into Star Trek? Home SR Originals Find out where to watch The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring, the epic fantasy film based on the original work by Tolkien. Today we’re going to take a look at where to watch The Lord of the Ring The Fellowship of The Ring and what streaming service you can find it on. Recognized as one of the most influential films of all time, "The Fellowship of the Ring" was the movie that started it all for Jackson’s renowned trilogy of fantasy films. Adapted from the first novel by author Tolkien, "The Fellowship of The Ring" introduced audiences to the fantasy world of Middle Earth and some of the characters that inhabited that land, both good and bad. The Fellowship that the title mentions is the group that was created with the purpose to destroy the One Ring and to finally get rid of the Dark Lord Sauron who has been plaguing Middle Earth for thousands of years. "The Fellowship of the Ring" introduced us to actors like Viggo Mortensen, John Rhys-Davies, and Billy Boyd, who were largely unknown before being revealed as characters in Jackson’s movie. Originally released in 2001, you can now get back into Jackson’s fantasy world as it is now available to stream. How Peter Jackson Became Director Of Lord of the Rings So how did Peter Jackson end up with becoming the director of LOTR? After all there had been many previous attempts to get the dense trilogy on screen and the rights to "The Lord of the Rings" had passed through many different hands before eventually landing on Fantasy Films, owned by Saul Zaentz. Fantasy Films were the company who funded an animated feature of the first half of "The Lord of the Rings" initially released in 1978. Ralph Bakshi was the animator who headed the feature and done a good job at condensing the large storyline into a rather palatable 133 minutes. Although profitable, the animation didn’t warrant enough success for sequel and the project was eventually abandoned. During this time, a young Peter Jackson saw the 1978 animation and although enjoying it, thought it became a little disjointed. It did however, encourage him to pick up the books and a love eventually formed. Watch The Lord of the RIngs The Fellowship of the Ring On HBO Max via Amazon Prime. In 1995, a relatively unknown Jackson, who was mostly known for his over the top graphic horror, discussed with his wife Fran Walsh the possibility of creating a trilogy that would do all the books' justice. After agreeing this would be within their skill set, the pair went to Miramax who helped them buy the rights from Saul Zaentz. Jackson started to write the scripts for the first two "Lord of the Rings" movies and as these took shape it soon became apparent that a trilogy of "Lord of the Rings" movies would exceed Miramax’s budget. Under pressure to cut the scripts into one film, Jackson put forward the proposal to New Line Cinema as the director wanted to do Tolkien’s books justice and believed this could not be done in one film. New Line CEO Robert Shaye took on board this proposal and eventually signed to buy the rights and to fund Jackson’s trilogy and as they say, the rest is history. Where To Watch The Fellowship of the Ring At the moment, if you want to watch "The Fellowship of the Ring" and be transported back into Middle Earth you can do so on Prime Video. This is helpful if you are a fan of the franchise as chances are, you will have been watching Prime’s new series, "The Rings of Power."
